The Research Problem With Oral-Only Phonemic Awareness

This is the most important section of this review, and it deserves directness.

The original Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum was built on a model of teaching sounds orally, without connecting them to printed letters. For years, this approach spread rapidly through schools and was championed by prominent Science of Reading advocates. The research picture has since clarified, and it is not favorable to the oral-only approach.

A 2025 peer-reviewed study examined 782 first graders in a randomized controlled design and found that students who received the oral-only version of Heggerty significantly improved their phonemic awareness scores, with an effect size of 0.65. That is a real gain in the specific skill being practiced. But those same students showed no significant improvement in word reading or oral reading fluency compared to peers who received no Heggerty instruction at all.

This finding aligns with a broader body of evidence. The National Reading Panel established in 2000 that phonemic awareness instruction including letters produces effect sizes nearly twice as large as oral-only instruction for both reading and spelling. For reading outcomes, instruction with letters produced an effect size of 0.67 compared to 0.38 without letters. For spelling, the difference was 0.61 versus 0.34. 

A 2024 meta-analysis published in Scientific Studies of Reading found that oral-only phonemic awareness instruction reaches diminishing returns at approximately 10.2 hours, after which the benefit levels off. At 8 to 12 minutes per day across a school year, the original Heggerty program can easily accumulate well beyond that threshold.

Heggerty acknowledged this research and responded directly. The company revised its phonemic awareness curriculum to incorporate phoneme-grapheme connections and launched Bridge to Reading as a program that integrates phonics with phonemic awareness from the start. That pivot reflects the company taking the evidence seriously.

What Bridge to Reading Gets Right

Bridge to Reading addresses the core problem of its predecessor. Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction are taught together, connecting sounds explicitly to the printed letters that represent them. The program follows a systematic scope and sequence across K through 3, includes decodable texts through the Heggerty Library, and has been evaluated by independent researchers.

According to Evidence for ESSA, a 2023-24 study in Georgia found first-grade students outperformed comparison peers on MAP Growth Reading scores at mid-year, with an effect size of 0.16. A separate kindergarten analysis showed effect sizes of 0.22 on MAP Reading Fluency for phonological awareness and phonics. A 2024-25 multi-district Michigan study evaluating Bridge to Reading as a Tier 2 intervention found an effect size of 0.33, with significant gains for students receiving special education services. These are real results, though modest. For context, the UFLI Foundations peer-reviewed research showed effect sizes above 1.0 in the same grade range. Bridge to Reading has growing evidence, but it is not yet among the most thoroughly researched options available. 

The Version Question

Because Heggerty has multiple programs at different stages of research and revision, the single most important question any school or parent should ask is: which version are we using? 

Schools still running the pre-2022 oral-only phonemic awareness lessons as their primary foundational skills instruction are working with a program the research no longer supports as sufficient on its own. Schools using Bridge to Reading or the updated phonemic awareness curriculum with integrated phoneme-grapheme connections are on meaningfully stronger ground.

Is Heggerty a Good Literacy Program?

Heggerty earns its reputation for ease of use and classroom engagement. The scripted lessons, hand motions, and consistent daily structure make it genuinely teacher-friendly, and young children respond well to the routines. For Pre-K and kindergarten classrooms that need a low-prep, high-engagement phonological awareness warm-up, the current phonemic awareness curriculum fills that role effectively, provided it is running alongside strong systematic phonics instruction and is not treated as a substitute for it.

The honest assessment of instructional quality depends entirely on which program a school is using and how. The original oral-only phonemic awareness curriculum, still present in many classrooms, does not produce word reading gains on its own. It builds phonemic awareness as an isolated oral skill, and the research shows that skill does not reliably transfer to reading without explicit connection to print. Schools relying on this version as their primary phonemic awareness block should update to the current edition or supplement immediately with systematic phonics instruction.

Bridge to Reading is a more defensible choice. It addresses the research gap, pairs phonemic awareness with phonics, and has accumulating evidence of moderate effectiveness. The cost is significant at $1,699 per classroom kit, and the effect sizes in published studies are modest compared to more established structured literacy programs. It functions best as a solid supplemental or Tier 2 tool rather than a standalone comprehensive literacy curriculum.

For families whose children are receiving Heggerty in school, the right question to ask is whether phonics instruction is happening alongside it and how letter-sound connections are being made explicit. Phonemic awareness and phonics are related but different skills. Children need both, taught together, to become readers.

A sound wall organizes phonemes by how they are physically produced in the mouth, giving students an articulatory anchor for each sound. Phonemic awareness practice is built into every single lesson, not front-loaded into early units. Students manipulate sounds orally before encountering them in print, which reflects what the Science of Reading identifies as the essential bridge between spoken and written language.

Scope and Sequence

The 128 concept lessons progress from simple to complex in a carefully ordered sequence. Short vowel CVC words come before consonant blends. Blends come before vowel teams. Dojo Sparks is a subscription-based learn-to-read program from ClassDojo designed for at-home use. It combines a phonics-based curriculum with technology offering real-time feedback and coaching, plus engaging game-like challenges to help kids master early reading fundamentals.

The program uses voice recognition technology to listen as children sound out letters and words. It provides immediate feedback and celebrates progress like a personal tutor would.

Dojo Sparks targets kids at the beginning of their learn-to-read journey. The program helps children master connections between letters and sounds, recognize and write letters, and learn to blend sounds into words. The developers describe it as generally fitting preschoolers and kindergarteners, though any child building early literacy skills can benefit.

The program requires about 15 minutes per day. With regular use, it typically takes 3-6 months to complete the curriculum. Lessons are delivered through the ClassDojo app on iOS or Android devices.

However, it also means dealing with ClassDojo’s persistent technical problems. Reviews of the ClassDojo parent app reveal significant usability issues that directly affect accessing Dojo Sparks lessons.

ClassDojo App Technical Problems
